SELFHOOD aims to provide tranquillity to the user through soft and fluid materials. Creating a sense of serenity is important in an environment full of social stigmas and expectations, especially when it comes to what we wear. The fabrics I design will be for a high-end A/W menswear collection, with a strong link to men’s well-being, recognising the pressures men face and aim to design thoughtfully and with consideration. SELFHOOD is a high end, luxury fashion brand with a focus on using wools to create fabrics with an indulgent feel. Finishing’s such as felting will add to the softness of my fabrics as well as creating a luxury feel. Taking inspiration from men’s and women’s fashion collections, I will be using digital embroidery to incorporate words and quotes that relate to the research I have been conducting. For years men have been identified as strong and masculine, often referred to as ‘real’ men, leaving little room for emotion and sensitivity. This leaves us with generations of men that believe they cannot truly be themselves and question decisions made in fear of how they’re being perceived. Research into men’s wellness brands such as ‘hims’ shows that change is happening and a conversation about men’s health is becoming more open. The fabrics I have designed aim to open this conversation further by creating an escapism for men through designs that may not be perceived as ‘traditional’ in men’s fashion.
