SENSE OF PLACE - Wool Coat Project

  • Megan Roberts

Second Year project. This was an extension of our previous Denim project, we had to reinterpret our existing research from the denim module as a staring point. The two main themes from the previous module for me were the English South Coast and Impressionist artwork. So to use this research in response to Wool I used fabric with multiple colours and patterns woven into it like houndstooth and check to mimic the impressionist painting textures, and I used colours inspired by the South West Coast. The concept behind the design was to create a collection of coats that responded to the weather of the coastline, so that when it intereacted with the dynamic weather of the South West it actually enhanced the design. That is where the concept of multiple pleats came in. This project was one of my favourite final outcomes and one that I actually got to shoot on location upon finishing it, but it was one of the most tedius makes ever!

Customer Profile: The woman who wears this collection is the new and more modern seedling of the English Rose. She is cool and careless, stylish and super independant. Understands the power of nature and respects it so. Feels at home in the fresh air and wears very minimal makeup. She loves heritage pieces and heavy, luxury garments.
My favourite part of this whole project was finishing it and being able to shoot it in the very location it was inspired by! The colours and the movement of the shoot really do the coat justice. I made an accompanying series of 6 postcards from this shoot to be paired with the collection, as postcards are something so quintessentailly associated with the British Seaside.
