I had the challenge of creating a children’s book based around a difficult topic. I chose to focus on sleeping disorders, narcolepsy and insomnia. Although I don't suffer from narcolepsy, I thought contrasting the two would allow the characters to learn from each other. As it was a serious topic, I added elements of humour throughout to lighten the subject. I used negative space to differentiate the spreads and make them engaging. For instance, on page 10 I added some “Z”s to announce the loudness of the monster. I used a legible serif font to make it traditional yet easy enough to read for its intended audience. Which I tested by having my young cousin read through it. I made it easier for parents to voice each character, by matching the colour of the spoken text to them. The book is now used as an example for new students on the module it was made for. For a full breakdown of the designs, visit my portfolio: https://knkn.myportfolio.com/
