Sling Studio Bournemouth Live Brief

  • Niamh Phillips

Sling studios have presented a live brief to us as a university to collate and gather different ideas and samples of scarfs they can use as a company. Sling studio is a company who specialise in slings for the use of the mother and her baby. The idea is to be able to carry the baby around for all the mother’s tasks and needs in a fashionable, unique way. The idea of the brief is to design scarfs that best suit the idea of the connection between the mother and the company itself. The connection needs to be kept remained when the child is of the age of three or older. I will be exploring different drawings, prints, use of the machines in the workshop and also embellishments to create different designs for the scarfs. I will aim to keep innovative, however, I will think and keep my ideas professional to gain connection with the company and keep the customers happy and valued. For this assignment, we have been given a live brief to practice for the next five weeks of study. I will be focusing my time on the development of the samples so that I can develop different ideas and overcome problems throughout the project. I will be exploring ideas based around the ‘Dorset Countryside’ as a base of imagery for my project. I will explore drawing with different materials, using first hand imagery as a starter for my project, collaging with different materials to create samples and prints ready for final outcomes. I will be using the laser cutter with different materials to explore different and unique ways of working with fabrics to create scarfs. I will be designing imagery for scarfs and maybe other printed items taking original design themes from the company, changing the scale and colour palettes to create a 140cm square scarf layout. I am creating scarfs for customers who have children around the age of three to maintain the relationship between the customer and the studio allowing continuous support of the brand and a wider audience. I am expected to research and review trials and errors throughout the project to gain a collection ready for mass production. I will need to create mood boards and client boars to pinpoint central company values. I am required to create sketches, photography and design planning to use this for promotional social media and for my samples. The five weeks will need to be planned out thoroughly so that I can achieve personal goals and achievements. To achieve these goals, I will create a timetable of my work and aspirations for the project so that I am able to complete tasks in time and remain organised.
