Spirit of Soho

The video concept for my Spirit of Soho application demonstrating how the artwork will appear when it is in motion. Location 2: The Garage Soho Four nylon balloons inflate and deflate like a breathing organism and together they create a unified dance with the wind from the fans. At the same time, the lights colour of balloons changes along with the movement. During the day time the LED lights inside the balloons will be visible but at night the will be much brighter and clearer. The spirit of Soho is two things that connect on a cellular level, the creative energy coming from the industries and the diverse individuals who feed the area with colour and culture. Like a living organism, Soho lives and breathes in a dynamic but balanced manner. There are the creative giants who are the individual cells, producing the building blocks of ideas and information that allow the organism, which is what people think when they hear Soho, to take shape and form. 1. Soho Breathes Soho inhales the carbon energy from all the performers, directors, artists, advertisers, workers, tourists, bouncers and bartenders, then exhales a revitalising creative air for us all to breath. We will represent this breathing with an arrangement of four spheres that are rhythmically inflated and deflated with air. The spheres are the cells, and there are four cells arranged in a square, like the square shape of Soho’s boundary and the square shape of the exhibition space’s window and window panes. 2. Soho Colourful Soho paints a vibrant picture of modern life with a colourful palette of cultures, places and personalities that shine in the day and glow in the night. We will show the colour and creativity of Soho by placing a dense cluster of LED lights into the centre of each cell to become the nucleus. Each light cluster will transition to a different colour smoothly and the transition speed will vary, so each cell will have a unique colour sequence and speed. 3. Soho Dynamic Soho captures new ideas and technologies, embracing the digital revolution in all it’s creative industries but also allowing the old technologies and ideas a place to roam free. We will take this dynamic and sometimes conflicting nature of Soho and allow the breathing cells to interact with each others space. They will press and push into each other, advancing and retreating but in an overall state of balance, no cell is permitted dominance over the others.
