Technological OVERKILL - British Fur Trade Competition Entry

  • Megan Roberts

This was my submission to the British Fur Trade annual design competition. I put it together at a point in my life where I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the presence of technology in my day to day interactions. It was bgeinning to feel that there was not one part of my day that I could not achieve without the use of technology or the internet, and that thought actually scared me! However, trying to marry fur (something so intrinsically natural) and technology (the complete opposite!) at first seemed like a tricky task, but the more I looked into it and contextualised my ideas, the more naturally the ideas seemed to flow. I created a colourful collection with tech inspired detailing and 1960's silhouettes and lines. The making of this project was actually quite theraputic and it is something I would love to revist/build upon in the future. I also find it quite funny looking back on it as I feel it was foreshadowing my 2020 Graduate Collection...

Looking into the History of Fur and it's relationship with human history in order to understand the material better.
1960's Fashion was hugely inspired by the 'Space Race', between the US and Russia that happened over the decade. The clothes and aesthetics were very forward looking and futuristic, both in their design and thier fabric.
I just love these little retro robot models!
