This was a very special project for the charity Teenage Cancer Trust for their #STILLME campaign, aiming to help young people to feel comfortable as themselves while living with cancer or in remission from treatment. The campaign showed through video how the young people felt about their bodies as they were going through treatment and how the changes to their bodies affected their relationships with themselves. I was asked to create an image for the fundraising t-shirts for the campaign as I had previously created work about positive body image. To fully understand the campaign and get to know the charity better, I was invited to visit the facilities at the Macmillan Cancer Centre, where I saw the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit, made for young people to have as much of a normal life as possible while in their care. There were games rooms, workshops, tv’s and lots of activities for the young people to do. The work they do is truly amazing. I was able to meet a couple of the young people while taking part in one of the art workshops, where I spoke to them about their hobbies and artwork. It was important that the artwork was to be suitable for young people and took a positive direction, something that they could wear with pride and really represented the ‘still me’ theme of still being able to express themselves and fully live as themselves. I chose to show five young people in the illustration, each with their own talent or hobby, enjoying what they each love to do whether that’s listening to music, reading, painting, sports or spending time with their pets!
