Terra Auris

  • Loukas Angelou

Building on a hypothesis that ceramic vessels can absorb and store sounds from the environments that were placed within, STUDIOLAV designed a terracotta vase that could act as a communication device. Although the hypothesis is not proven yet, it is believed that if true, then it could be possible in the future to retrieve, extract and isolate sounds or even whole conversations from vessels. Sitting still Terra Auris silently records the most intimate conversations and embeds their sound imprint within its terracotta body. Terra Auris is inspired by the ancient Greek amphorae. Further research on sound mirrors, childhood toys, and other acoustic related objects also informed the final design.
