The Collective-Eat Project

  • Ewan McDonald

The Concept The Collective Eat Project is a collection of three interventions that facilitate social connections through food and interaction. Accompanied by experimental and seasonal menus, strangers engage in unique experiences together for conversation opportunities. The Research Numerous design research methods were applied to explore food’s role in social situations. As the project was user-centred, body storming, prototypes and more were explored. Surveys and interviews provided a base, highlighting emotional and humorous connections to it. A body storming session strengthened this, with people sharing food that they have a story about. Time lapses helped capture the bustling atmosphere. Testers helped explore prototypes, which continued to build understanding of the connection of food and socialising. Throughout all sessions, there was a constant theme of playfulness. Material tests were carried out, building a palette that was vital to bring the whole collection together. The research all came together to help inform an exciting and playful project.

The Objects

This was explored through interactions on different scales.

Tandem allows two eaters to design their own plate, from ceramic to food. Divided into two sections, one for sharing and the other for creating your masterpiece. The concept aims to promote sharing with others, allowing interaction and creativity to flourish.

Triad brings three eaters together to design a platter. Choosing from a selection of foods, the meal is built by them. Designed to encourage sharing and giving, the eaters hold Triad together, creating a physical bond.

Tetrad creates social experience through hidden choices. Four eaters add toppings to a meal, pass it on to the next and share their creation. This furniture sized concept supports eaters trying to see what others are doing, with gaps and holes allowing for playful interactions.
