The Eye in the Sky

Brief: explain key aspects of the HST’s history / achievements to date. This could be as an overview, or you may choose to focus on specific areas of science / discovery. In it's twenty six year history, how has the HST increased our understanding of the universe and our place in it?

'The Hubble Space Telescope’s launch in 1990 sped humanity to one of its greatest advances in that journey. Hubble is a telescope that orbits Earth. Its position above the atmosphere, which distorts and blocks the light that reaches our planet, gives it a view of the universe that typically far surpasses that of ground-based telescopes. Hubble is one of NASA’s most successful and long-lasting science missions. It has beamed hundreds of thousands of images back to Earth, shedding light on many of the great mysteries of astronomy. Its gaze has helped determine the age of the universe, the identity of quasars, and the existence of dark energy.’

Since it's inception the Hubble Space Telescope has allowed us to see into the furthest depths of our universe. As a response to this brief I designed a publication which would highlight it's best discoveries to date. Being an illustrator by nature, this project provided an opportunity to develop my skills as a visual editor – all the content was readily available so the focus of my ‘research’ was understanding, analysing and editing the existing content to create a coherent and convincing final outcome. The audience was adults who are interested in science / astronomy and who would typically watch science-based TV programmes, e.g. The Sky at Night or Horizon and read popular science books and the science pages of newspapers such as The Guardian. I communicated the given information in the media format of a picture book/zine (printed and digital) to develop my layout and editing skills when working with a combination of image and text. I also believed this to be one of the most effective formats to translate the given information to the specific target audience.
