The Folio Society House of Illustration Competition 2020

  • Justine Matthew

For the Folio Society's House of Illustration brief this year, entrants were set the challenge of illustrating three poems for a collation of Love Poems by Imitiaz Dharker. These three poems were The Good Morrow by John Donne, Wild Nights! by Emily Dickinson and The Trick by Imitaz Dharker. These illustrations had to work alongside the poems, heightening the meaning for the reader.

The Good Morrow by John Donne. A poem about two world's colliding in the blissful moments of awakening next to the one you love. Donne compares his love as being greater than the sea, and time itself.
Wild Nights! by Emily Dickinson tells of a woman celebrating the thought of having another wild night with her lover as her love intensifies.
The Trick by Imitiaz Dharker depicts the waiting for night to come so lovers can be reunited. The poem has tight alignment, possible representing the cramped room the narrator finds themselves in.
