Last year I had the pleasure of producing a documentary: Passing the Baton - The Legacy of the Windrush Pioneers. The film was funded by Sheffield City Council and filmed and directed by filmmaker Paris North. I wanted to capture the stories of Windrush elders and their children to explore the influences of that generation on Sheffield's cultural landscape. As we were filming we found that there was a deeper story that needed to be touched on and we decided to follow that silver thread. The question that emerged focused on the lack of cultural spaces for Caribbeans within the city and how that was affecting our young people. So many of the amazing people we spoke to touched on the disconnection between our elders and young people, the decline of cultural spaces, and how they now felt the need to pass on the culture and values they were taught by the Windrush generation to our young people. Here's the very influential youth and community worker Lloyd Samuels speaking on just that!
