The Journey

  • Sahlah Azhar

This project was my submission for the Louise Xin Couture-Sustainable Future Design Competition. I dedicated this project for the sake of the refugees, telling the story of a little Syrian girl on a big journey. I saw sustainable options by using already existing garments and materials, by up-cycling, saving manufacturing resources and create new garments with repurchased fabrics and trimmings. I also put a big weight in culture as I believe refugees brings cultures together. As a way to showcase the beauty of traditions, I introduced a beautiful traditional shibori tie and dye technique, which reminded me of the sea. Shibori is an organic sustainable way of creating prints, the process is all done by hand in a way that doesn’t contribute to any energy and emission as if it would have been done by machines in big factories. I included unique handmade patchwork pieces, I acquired while in Pakistan, I sewed them into small boats, to represent the different places where people start their journey. From the start wanted my project to be about hope and raise awareness of different humanitarian crisis, so I integrated flight tags with links to different charities and websites to learn about and how to help people in such situations.
