The Little Things - JD Williams

  • Ellie Bate

A three week placement at JD Williams, Manchester - June 2015. As the JD design department heavily focuses on designing the catalogues for their many different brands; Julipa, Jacamo, Simply Be, Fashion World to name a few, it seemed fitting to create an editorial piece. As the general target market for these brands is aged 30 years or over, I decided to make a 16 page insert aimed at a younger female audience (late teens to young adults), that could be used in one of their catalogues.

A Spring/Summer collection named, The Little Things, this booklet details the accessories that give can your outfit personality but are often forgotten. It includes symbols that are used to detail offers on certain products, these consist of Editors Choice, Half Price, Limited Time Only and A Great Gift.
The second half of the booklet details a sneak peek at next seasons Autumn/Winter collection. It also includes a three day, behind the scenes snapshot journey of my experience at a real photoshoot. Unfortunately, I cannot display these images as they are the property of JD Williams and have yet to be disclosed to the public.
Week 1: I spent the first two days experimenting with typography for the front cover as I wanted the personality of the book to be free flowing and less confined, unlike the set layouts of the JD catalogues. This influences the type of imagery I wanted, which involved pouring out bottles of nail varnish and drawing with make-up. I was also inducted in JD's inhouse photography studio to create the jewelry and make-up spreads.
Week 2: My second week meant going to a photoshoot at Plan Pictures studios. I got to shadow the crew in their busy job roles and help out when needed. I captured the seamstress working on fitting the clothes to the model, the design manager trying to decide the colour of the set for each day and different styles used in hair & make-up. The final week consisted of compiling my images and finalising the booklet.
