The Meaning of Liff

I was asked to design a book in a way that would show that books can still be interesting and fun even with the introduction of digital books on a tablet or kindle.

I explored traditional books, contemporary books, and publication design. I observed the different types of typography, images, navigation, hierarchy, formats and forms of binding that were used.

For this brief I had to work with the text “The Meaning of Liff” by Douglas Adams and I was asked to design an “editorial design project that considers how we read in the 21st century”.

The concept came from the postal service as they use signs and icons to communicate what is contained in the package such as “fragile” and “this way up”.

The book mentions different places in the UK so I felt this concept combined well as the postal signs are used all over the UK to communicate.
