The Refectory

  • Céline Strolz

The Refectory is the accompanying publication of recently completed Ibstock School designed by architects Maccreanor Lavington. The new refectory re-imagines the traditional ‘grand hall’ as a celebration of communal life. Environmental considerations were at the heart of the design. Inside, natural light and ventilation, good acoustics and a warm timber structure offer a comfortable and calm environment. The building protects the existing natural heritage of the site, including mature London Plane trees. The book features a photographic essay by Jack Hobhouse, architectural documents and an essay by Tom Waddicor and Anna Sylvester-Johnson. For the design, it was essential to take the same quiet approach. Attention was placed on tactility, visual and sensorial appreciation.
