The Road (Magazine series)

  • Imogen Hawgood

Accompanying my paintings under the title of ‘The Road’, this series of magazines explores in more depth the ideas and research which led to my final painted outcomes. These magazines reference my research into the American Dream of the 60s and the allure of the West, the influence of music from the same era, and personal connections to the ideal of hitting the road. www.imogenhawgood.com/publications

LOS ANGELES 1960-70

The idealised American Dream of the 1960s and the allure of the West are ideas embodied by the city of Los Angeles. Influenced by music, literature and film from this era, my work seeks to break down the façade of beauty and Hollywood glamour to reveal a grittier undertone that quietly consumes the city of Angels.
HAWGOOD ROAD TRIPS

My great Grandfather, Professor John A Hawgood, was a historian and researcher, specialising in the American West. His research took him backwards and forwards across the US, on road trips which traced the movements of American ‘Mountain Men’ and pioneers in the nineteenth century during the colonisation of the West. Hawgood Road Trips explores the documentation of J. A. Hawgood’s research trips of the 20s, and subsequent visits by his children, John and David Hawgood, in the 60s.
MUSIC IN LA

Singer-songwriters including Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison and Neil Young were drawn to Los Angeles, as so many were during the 60s, finding homes in Laurel Canyon behind the Sunset Strip. Through their genius and madness, they created the soundtrack to the counterculture, their lyrics empowering an entire generation.
