I studied Illustration at Norwich University of the Arts and my work includes design, animation and, primarily, illustration and painting. I am interested in our perception of reality, and the often contrasting experiences of it. Following a trip to Los Angeles, one particular focus for me has been the American Dream, the generations of soul-searchers ‘hitting the road’ in the 1950s and 60s, and the mythical allure of the West.

- The Swimmer‘The Swimmer' is a short story by John Cheever, set in 1960s suburbia. The narrative explores ideas associated with the disillusionment of the American Dream, made manifest in its main character, Neddy, whose obsession with chasing the Dream ultimately ruins him. The Dream has become an unrealistic expectation of the perfect life and suburbia a microcosm for American society, embodying both the idealised Dream and the slowly unfolding crisis which has followed as America wakes up from it. - Beat Covid-19Inspired by recent imagery showing the empty freeways of Los Angeles, a city known for its heavy traffic, due to coronavirus lockdowns, ‘Beat Covid-19’ communicates the drastically different environments created by pandemic restrictions and reiterates the importance of social distancing. www.imogenhawgood.com
