Having an interest in American war films, I created a title sequence for the 20th century fox production called The Thin Red Line. The film is based on the novel by James Jones, it tells a semi-fictionalised version of the Battle of Mount Austen, which was part of the Guadalcanal Campaign during World War II.
In the title sequence, I wanted to reflect the brutal fighting between US and Japanese Empire but with a tribal art feel to reflect the setting (Guadalcanal) using traditional sumi ink, the ink also gives the sequence that Japanese element. The ink morphs to create depictions from the film and the themes it explores.
