The Throw Ups

Hello and welcome to another edition of 'Just How In The Hell Does He Do That (and do I really care since It's such an amazing illustration)?!'
Below is my Inktober 2020 illustration for the prompt 'Throw'. I got super excited about this one, knowing instantly that I was going to create a band called 'The Throw Ups' and combine character design and typography (my favest things ever) to make a bad ass poster.
And I did! I was super pumped with how the drawing went. Composition flowed in all the right ways, character was animated and it pretty much looked as I'd imagined, which almost never happens. Problem was the colours...
Unlike the drawing, they didn't work like they did in my head. Messed about with all my usual tricks bar changing the colour scheme. Still nothing. So I did something unusual for me.
I don't know why, but I went right back to the skeleton and inverted it. Then switched a couple of hidden layers back on. My mind is blown! The colour fills seep outside the drawing with no outlines to hide them. The negative space now a hypnotic white.
I've enjoyed offsetting layers to reveal process and error for a while now but this was something else.
Played around a little further and settled on the below.
