The Uninhabitable Earth

As part of a university module, I created work for the Penguin Student Design Award 2021. I made submissions for both the Fiction and Non-Fiction categories. This is my Non-Fiction design for the book ‘The Uninhabitable Earth’ by David Wallace-Wells.

Personally loved the current cover of the book, featuring a bee surrounded by white space. It was so powerful and simple. I wanted to create something that was much more graphic in communicating the subject matter while playing around with a visual that was different to the minimalism portrayed in the original cover. I found myself inspired by the era of Pelican Books that focused on using circles as the main focus. This also paired well with my concept of humanity needing to move to another planet after draining the Earth of its resources. In an earlier version of this concept, the blues were a deep yellow which really communicated the deterioration of our planet, or so I thought until it was mistaken for Mars. This lead to the beautiful blue.
