#THEMAGNET

The Scottish Independence Referendum held in 2014 was a significant event in Scottish history for change. During this time, the use of propaganda by the media was an influential factor in changing/ leaning support in favor of the No campaign. Being indoctrinated and bombarded with certain information favouring a particular side is undoubtably going to sway your beliefs a certain way. Being told the same information repeatedly, solidifies and marks these statements as true and reliable. What happens frequently, is that many people rely on these biased news channels for information and many do not complete their own independent research to fact check against what is being broadcasted. By changing our actions during a political campaign and to take it upon ourselves to gather information from “reliable” sources, from experts, who are unbiased and sharing facts backed up by evidence. If we take a more pro-active role and refuse to feed into the lies supplied by the media, then we can make a change and challenge the way that politicians and the media manipulate the public.
I designed a series of posters advertising a social media campaign called "#THEMAGNET" aiming to encourage people to be more aware of media indoctrination and manipulation.
I would hope that the campaign would encourage people to do their own research and change the way that we interact with political campaigns.
I aimed to display this concept through the symbolism of a magnet which acts as the controlling figure, with the relation of the North and South ends of the magnet to represent the divide between the North and South of the UK.
