About me
Hi, I’m Eilidh Smith, a Graphic Designer in third year at Arts University Bournemouth. Within the field of Graphic Design, I am most intrigued with print – specifically, layout and editorial design. I enjoy considering the balance between text and image on a page and experimenting with different layouts and compositions to display information. I believe that design is a continual learning process and every project you work on helps you to learn something new.

  • Leaving your Mark
Leaving your MarkCreative Conscience 2017 - Gold Award Winner The lasting effects of bullying can be deeply damaging to the mental health of a victim of bullying. Nasty words and actions can change the way that an individual sees themselves, affecting their self-confidence throughout their life. Society is changing and more needs to be done to combat these changes and new requirements. More help needs to be provided on how to deal with this new type of bullying. Cyber bullying. This short film forms the basis for an anti-bullying campaign with the aim to encourage young people to consider the lasting mark that they can leave on others and to raise awareness for bullying. • The DNA of English Language
The DNA of English LanguageThe Challenge  Trace the history of a word, group of words or phrase and show where it came from - its provenance - how and when it became part of the English Language and how its meaning, use, spelling and punctuation might have changed in the process.  Solution  A typographic book mapping the history of the word clue though English Language. The history of the word is portrayed through literature texts which are on layered pages of tracing paper to create strips of DNA profiles. The DNA profiles represent the genetic make up of the word, showing the different characteristics that are inherited from different eras through its history while also reflecting a forensic technique for investigating clues. Thread is used for the binding to tie in with the original definition of the word clue as a ball of thread or yarn. The cover is painted with thermochromic ink which leaves a temporary trace of the readers hand prints from their body heat when they handle the book.
  • Rewild
RewildThe Challenge  Design or redesign a consumer toy and its product packaging to eliminate waste, using circular design principles. Brief set by RSA. Solution  “Rewild” is a toy aimed at children aged 4-6 which encourages interaction with the outdoor environment and living things within nature. Returnable stamping tokens are used as a way to teach children about circular design systems and reuse as a concept to take forward and become aware of as a way to be better for their environment. Tokens are delivered in thin packaging to the child’s house which contain the challenges, circular record board, stamp token holder and an ink pad. When the child completes a challenge they pick out the token and click it into the holder. They press the holder onto the correct circle on their board and put the token back in the space in the packaging. Once all the activities are complete, the parts are repackaged, sealed and resent back to the company for cleaning and maintainance to be sent out and reused by another child. The reusable aspect is the tokens which are engraved with designs to create patterns to stamp on their board. The packaging is used as the communication and storing device before sending the packaging back in the Royal Mail to receive the next pack to move up the levels to become a gold nature explorer.
  • #THEMAGNET
#THEMAGNETStudent First Year Project.  The Scottish Independence Referendum held in 2014 was a significant event in Scottish history for change. During this time, the use of propaganda by the media was an influential factor in changing/ leaning support in favor of the No campaign. Being indoctrinated and bombarded with certain information favouring a particular side is undoubtably going to sway your beliefs a certain way. Being told the same information repeatedly, solidifies and marks these statements as true and reliable. What happens frequently, is that many people rely on these biased news channels for information and many do not complete their own independent research to fact check against what is being broadcasted. By changing our actions during a political campaign and to take it upon ourselves to gather information from “reliable” sources, from experts, who are unbiased and sharing facts backed up by evidence. If we take a more pro-active role and refuse to feed into the lies supplied by the media, then we can make a change and challenge the way that politicians and the media manipulate the public.
  • Silver & Green Olive Packaging & Website
Silver & Green Olive Packaging & WebsiteA live industry brief set by Salad, to package and promote a new range of olive fridge pots for Mediterranean food specialists “Silver & Green”. It was important that we designed to be fit for the target audience of 25-55 year olds and their current position in the market. It is important to remain "on brand" to be consistent and recognisable. It would be a high end product sold in farm shops, delis and higher end supermarkets sold for £2.99-£3.99. The product needs to be "more accessible", "consistent" with the existing ranges and appear "fresh". Packaging I approached this packaging design by picking out the key recognisable elements and styles within their existing range of olives. I decided to base my initial experimentation on watercolour, whitespace and a transparent overlay of the logo in the background. The final packaging design aims to put the emphasis on the freshness and quality of ingredients. I had looked at how important it is for the potential consumer to be able to see the product through the packaging. I felt that the packaging would be more functional as a rounded pot with a wrap around sleeve design. I wanted to ensure that the product came across as a high quality, fresh product to fit well in their high end market. Website Websites are a very important port of call to visit to find out more. I felt that their current website did not give the user the best/ easiest experience to navigate around the site, so I decided to redesign the site and use the design components from the new packaging and the bold use of colour and white to give a professional and high quality feel.
  • Resume Journey Book
Resume Journey BookThe Challenge Create a book to show the process of your user centred design project, thinking about hierarchy, colour, grid systems and how the user interacts with the book. For my journey book, I had decided that I wanted to try out a type of binding that I had never tried before and to bind the book myself. I decided that Japanese binding would be a good type as I felt that it was able to reflect the concept of fixing a problem and I felt that the thread and stitching was also relevant to the theme of medical. I had chosen by pattern to have 5 points to represent my 5 categories that I worked on during the project. I also used this multiple of 5 inside the book by breaking the contents up into 5 chapters each using the 5 main colours from my colour scheme for my app.
