Tradition as a Making Tool

How can we use traditions as a tool to shape a new culture to create a more inclusive community through public space design? ‘Tradition as a Making Tool’ is a research project. It focuses on using traditions and local culture as a facilitating tool to create a more inclusive and durable society. The aim is to activate public space by introducing a new form of urban design elements incorporating green. The purpose of showing the importance of green and to create multifunctional new places for inhabitants to come together. It’s based on an important Turkish tradition “coming together around food” for instance during Ramadan (iftars), weddings or funerals. These events create a semi-public space where important social interaction takes place between inhabitants. With our rollable gardens, we bring that tradition into the city. The project that we designed in cooperation with Dutch partner Space Crafters, is one of the 4 selected projects from Turkey for StimuleringsFonds Open Call: Turkey, Russia, Egypt, Morocco #2 themed design for a sustainable and inclusive society.
