Two Poetry Books

  • Alexandra Patel

1 collection of original poems; two books. The aim of this project was to create two distinct products using the same content, expressing the collection's message— an insomniac straddling reality and dreams— in different ways. This was achieved through visual design elements and the production process. Book 1—an art book— is a product of experimentation. The poems were etched onto plastic sheets using dry point methods and then printed on transparent paper. Because of the flipped nature of printing, the text was only legible when read from the other side. Hand drawn designs and pictures were etched on A4 steel plates using polymer photo-etching. This enabled experimentation with colour and texture. Through these unconventional printing methods, my intention was to blur the line as to whether this book was literature or art, encompassing the poems' theme of amorphousness. Book 2—a pamphlet— is your typical poetry book: small and inexpensive, meant for the palm of a hand or the pocket of a worn pair of pants. To appeal to young audiences, it boasts a bold juxtaposition of colour, pure black lines against a vivid yellow block; it features hand-drawn designs (digitally scanned) that mimic popular trends in line art and minimalism. By displaying the drawings on the outside and concealing the poems on the inside through a French fold, this little booklet is a physical representation of how our deepest thoughts hide in our subconscious.
