Type hierarchy – poster design

Having understood that type hierarchy is crucial in passing on information unambiguously, I experimented in the design process by varying the weight, size and position of the texts. By also making use of a grid system, I created a balanced poster solely using type.
The poster design involves the exploration of grid system. To have a deeper understanding about this design principle, I traced out the layout of some well-designed publications and newspapers and analysized the grid systems applied. The images below also show some of my experimentations on using different grid systems.
Throughout the design process, I was inspired by the work of Josef Müller-Brockmann. Researching on his design approach has motivated me to explore on the creation of greater variety of grids.
Images below demonstrate my exploration on type hierarchy. I cut out texts of different weights and sizes and placed them in various positions on a piece of paper. I then observed the visual effects and make design judgement. To better visualize the mock-up posters, I generated them in my computer and adjusted positions of the texts according to grid systems.
