The Wellbeing Foundation Africa improves health outcomes for women, infants and children in Nigeria. The organisation prides itself on programmes and advocacy work in Nigeria and around the world that allow every health worker and mother to have access to life altering advice. The organisation uses informal WhatsApp groups to pair pregnant women and new mothers with midwives and doctors. The WhatsApp Mamacare Chatbot was born out of a need to formalise the groups and market the critical offering of bespoke and immediate health guidance and advice, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when many of its in-person classes were cancelled, and health misinformation was rife. The project revolutionised the way the WBFA was communicating with mothers in Nigeria, where maternal mortality is nearly 40%. I devised the idea, commissioned the project to a team of web developers, and worked with the WBFA team to ensure that the programme would be sustainable with internal processes.
