What are NFTs and why freelancers should know about them

As freelancers, we should always be keeping one eye on the future, because nobody else is going to look out for us. This is why I think all freelancers should be starting to pay attention to what’s happening with NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) and cryptocurrencies. Chances are you’ve heard of NFTs and find the whole thing a bit confusing. Don’t worry, so do I. The idea that JPEG images or short video clips are selling for thousands of dollars is a strange one to get your head around. Anything that involves weird, pixelated cartoon characters being traded can feel a little off-putting, counterculturey and confusing if you’re not in the know. But the truth is the more I learn about this technology and the principles behind it, the more I’m sure it’s going to define the future and how we do business as freelancers. I think freelancers in particular are going to be hugely impacted as the true implications of what’s happening with this technology become clear and more widely understood and appreciated. If you look beneath the click-baity, vacuous news articles, it’s clear that something significant and most likely game changing is happening beneath the surface. I’m certainly no expert in any of this, so I do recommend doing your own research where you can. But it’s clear that a lot of very smart people are moving to work in this area and on Web3 – which is essentially the next generation of the internet. Whenever a lot of people smarter than I am are getting excited about something, I take it as good indication that it’s something worth paying attention to – especially if it takes a little effort to dig into it and understand what’s really happening.
