White Chicks Film Screening

  • Jennifer Singh

As part of the final year project for my undergraduate degree, we had to form teams and work collaboratively to put all the knowledge gained from the degree together and create an event from scratch. My team and I decided to go with a themed film screening event and received little to no financial capital to help start the venture. Therefore, we did cake sale's at the university's campuses in order to raise capital for our project as well as put our own equity's to fund the screening. This project entailed an opportunity for my team and I to really learn the practicalities of events. We had to do venue viewings, negotiations with venue managers, tracking of all legal forms and licenses, market the event through social media, keep track of the ticketing platform, seek all supplies needed under the budget, answer any customer queries and many more. We developed on many skills throughout the duration of this project from preparation to implementation, for example, problem-solving, attention to detail, time management, organisation, communication, positive mindset and initiative. The outcome of the project was positive in terms of breaking even through ticket, food and drink sales, however, it was not a full house as only 30/60 guests participated and turned up. This allowed us to really understand how we could improve if we had to do it all over again. But it was a great experience to undergo.
