Who owns my selfie

  • Juan Escallon
Social media platforms and mobile applications have become key elements for governmental agencies, corporations, brands and other identities to extract, study and sell peoples personal information. "Who Owns My Selfie" was the dissertation project for my masters Degree in Digital Media at Goldsmiths University.
The projects consist of a awareness website campaign that aims to create consciousness regarding the use of people’s digital self portraits (Selfies) by these private and governmental organisations .
For the development of the video I fabricated a fictitious cyber identity - 'I Blame Velvet', which included an account on Instagram @imblamevelvet. This identity simulate the life of a trendy and fashionable lifestyle blogger (seen instagram profile at (www.instagram.com/iblamevelvet). The main goal of the account was to generate the idea of a 'real' cyber identity to star as the main character of the video.

The narrative within the campaign revolves around the idea of showing a “real case scenario” of how brands, corporations or even individuals can take advantage of people's personal photographs uploaded to social media platforms by using them for their own benefit without consent.
