Wild Goose

  • Daniel Brierley

The Cornish town of St. Just is home to the Goose fair, a pagan festival where people donate money to a goose, and ask favours. The church has latched onto this and raises vast sums every year through parading a poor Goose around town. Two people in need of a favour are Max and Mike, who have been trying for a child for 6 years, in order to save their car crash of a relationship. When they hear about a revolutionary type of IVF treatment- involving pumping Goose fat into the blood stream to slow down hormones- they’re delighted- but a consultancy reveals it will cost over £10k. Which is money they just don’t have. They continue to have sex a few times a day, hating having to even touch each other. Max is the local driving instructor and she fantasies about driving out of St. Just at a 1000mph, and never looking back. Mike, with an estranged daughter from a previous relationship, just doesn’t know what he wants anymore. He thinks he wants Max but the phantom child has come between them. His dream is to win the annual Pride of West Cornwall Skittles tournament. Alexis, the son of local gangster Johnny Turney, sees the Goose money as his ticket away from the one- horse town of St. Just, which has become even more intolerable since his mother committed suicide and left him alone with his drunk and violent father. A dreamer, his ambitious plan is to rob the vicar and run for the coast with the Goose Money. One night, after Mike’s got wasted at the Skittles and they’ve had a deeply unromantic sex session on the hills, Max and Mike come back to their car to find thousands and thousands of pounds in bank notes scattered across the road. The answer to their ‘Baby’ prayers- or the start of a nightmare? For in the cold morning light they find the battered and bloody body of Alexis in the back seat of their car- and the police in hot pursuit of the robber who murdered the vicar in cold blood in his own church and stole the Goose money. As they decide what to do with their windfall- they have to stay one step ahead of the local police, as well as Johnny Turney on a mission to track down his missing son.
