World View - Global Virtual Exhibition (Open Art 2019)

  • Nathan Taylor

The 3rd edition of the Open Art project is the most ambitious exhibition we've ever curated. We received entries from artists in more than 40 different countries around the world. The final selection includes more than 350 pieces, from a total of 150 artists. That's a lot of admin! The concept for this exhibition was to display artwork on an interactive world map. We came up with an innovative way of doing this, which allows visitors to walk across oceans as they explore the exhibition.

There are gallery buildings dotted around the world map. These can often be found near capital cities, or in regions with a lot of represented artists.

Curat10n is based in the UK, so we naturally attracted a lot of local artists, but there were also many entries from India, the United States, Germany and a total of 40 different countries spanning the globe.
The concept is simple...

Visitors can walk around the world map and view art everywhere they go.
You can either become a giant, allowing you to walk across oceans and jump between island. Or you can shrink when you want to take a closer look at the art work. It's a bit like Alice in Wonderland but without th epotions and magic cookies.

This image (above) shows the world from a giant's perspective. You can see how the borders of the UK also provide wall space for artwork. The buildings provide additional gallery space in the centre of each region.
As you move around the map you can see capital cities marked with pins. These change colour as you visit each location, to show you where you have and haven't been. Just press ENTER and the country you are in will open up. The ground will move, and this ill reveal the exhibibition underneath.
Visitors can interact with every artwork in the exhibition. This allows you to instantly zoom in for a better view of each piece. You can also see detailed information about each artwork an artist.

There are also more than 20 video and sound pieces, including performance art, music, animation and filmmaking. Each multimedia piece has its own cinema room.
The aim of this exhibition is not only to focus on the artwork, but to learn a little more about the artists and where they come from. Each piece is shown in the artist's home location, as well as in another random location around the world. This encourages exploration. Visitors can also read about each piece and its creator.
The Open Art project invites artists from around the world to take part in their first virtual exhibition. It is free to enter, free to access and free to share.
