Yellow Peril: Who are my people?

  • Nicole Chui

"Who are my people?" or "谁是自己人?" was created in collaboration with performance artist Nicholas Tee. We presented this piece at the Yellow Peril club night at The Yard in Hackney, curated by Eastern Margins, Diaspora Disco and Chinabot Asia. The embroidered chillies in the piece symbolize spicy energy, and an omen that scares away white supremacy. Taking inspiration from Do Ho Suh's Who Am We? (1999), we covered our flag with the faces of the young east/southeast Asian diaspora in London and globally. This project was also covered by The Gallyry, and featured in British Art Journal Studies issue 13.
