Passion projects, side hustle, parallel learning. Whatever you want to call it, this year, I decided to give it a go. Looking at the cycling industry, racing seemed constrained to road race events or 50 minute ‘criterium races’. No variety existed in an industry where two-wheeled enjoyment comes in all shapes and forms. For spectators, a blink and miss experience summed up the reality of viewing an event from the side of the road. After a bit of deliberation, I created a cycling event with four competitive disciplines at the centre, set on a 1km circuit that spectators could see every inch of and threw in a load of food trucks, local breweries and a DJ. Seems a little more fun, no? Constantly outside of my comfort zone, I turbocharged my learning and gave my career as a brand consultant a vital injection of perspective. By self-initiating a ‘Google 20% time’ formula to my career, I found a new sense of enjoyment from work and met a whole load of the most incredible, generous and kind-hearted people along the way. So, you think it’s time to pursue your own passion project?
