Building on the work which I began as a video journalist for the paper, the multimedia team that I put together as editor-in-chief transformed the Anchor from a written publication to one which offered regional video coverage of the 2019 EU parliamentary election and UK general election. We interviewed candidates for the parties running in the two ‘university constituencies’, and covered the party leaders’ Cornwall - including Boris Johnson’s trip to a local cider farm and a brief interview with Jeremy Corbyn at the launch of Labour’s ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ policy in Falmouth. During this year, I expanded and worked alongside a team of section editors, publishing good quality, local journalism. We tried to steer away from covering stories which dominated the mainstream media, offering our readership a fresh and regionally-relevant perspective on events. I also worked alongside the Anchor’s art director on an overhaul of its online appearance with a full rebranding exercise. In November 2019, the paper won the award for ‘Best Development’ at the Student Publication Association Regional Awards - and we were highly commended for the category of ‘Best Impact’ after a video and story we published went viral.
