Over the course of my career to date, my practice has evolved into a balanced relationship between modern design technique and process, alongside a traditional craft practice, dictated to and focused on beauty in imperfection and contrast. The driving ideology being that of innovative material amalgamation, alongside the idea that aesthetics and desirability of a product can be directly derived from or attributed to the functionality of the work or material itself. This ideology drives me to create both unique and innovative designs.
I incorporate forged iron working, fused glass, and 3d printing to generate a visual and functional relationship within the finished product or prototype. This relationship is what I believe will enable craft to not only thrive in the future but flourish, embracing new technology.
Parallel to my own creative practice I have for the last few years worked within various HE institutions supporting and providing education to developing designers and students both in traditional metalworking skills and digital design.
Projects
- Scaffold IIAnother design in the scaffold collection built around the maximisation of impact whilst minimising production cost. Again this is a hollow form designed to minimise support produced during the print process as well as being modular in construction to maximised the print bed capacity. need work yet but the designs are getting to the point where i may pull the trigger in terms of getting a few printed!
- Winged PandemicKeeping it short and sweet this piece was conceived to symbolised the other side of the current world events. The light at the end of this long tunnel. Designed to be either cast or printed DMLM I hope to get this produced as soon as events allow. Most likely in silver either sandblasted or polished.
- CarouselThis piece designed as part of my ongoing researches focuses on support generation mitigation through a calculated use of shallow vertical angles. the theory being that the design itself minimises the necessary support material needed, and that this intentional design feature helps shape the form and aesthetic direction itself. I'll be posting more designs built around the same logic in the coming days/weeks.
- Mors et Vitadesigning now predominantly for DMLM (direct metal laser melting) many of my more commercial works that I will be posting over the coming works focus on intricacy and a very ostentatious style this is both as at this point in time I find this engaging and I am in the process of intentionally attempting to push machine capabilities. this piece designed for a friend initially focuses on the idea or mortality and is inspired by quote from critical role (caduceus) “From life to death to back again.”
