I use a range of mediums within my work, from collaging, painting, drawing, textiles, textile printing, dress making, 3D and ceramic work. The main themes within my work are to understand the modern world we live in and question the effects it has on us. Also examining the social changes throughout history with a sense of imagination and poetic license to create work that tells a story of times gone by and the sense of future. Colour plays a huge role within my work. I feel colour and pattern are congruous to depicting a narrative, time or place historically and today. I am drawn to social history and the concept that peoples’ lives are intangible; yet, create a mark, however big or small onto society. Through a narrative and abstraction of work, conveying perception of society changing via personal nostalgia and wider understanding to illustrate change, we are all susceptible too. Then relay that through illustration and visual commination back into society is important. Where something can be aesthetically pleasing, I find there to be more of an importance if the work communicates a deeper concept while depicting a narrative; giving the drawing or object a place in which to educate, allowing alternative interpretations to the viewer. Working in mediums such as clay, paper and textiles inserts tactility to work that is sometimes lost in the digital sphere. I find the results rewarding, by creating objects you can hold and touch which also engages visually, while depicting the narrative. The transition of turning a flat drawing into something 3D is fascinating, as the journey the narrative takes is conveyed through the journey of the drawing.Locked Pro Plan feature
