Recruitment
I work alongside my SEE to host assessment days in store and audition potential candidates. I test them on their brand knowledge, customer service and application skills and if successful, they will be interviewed by either my SEE or myself. I also interview every beauty assistant or deputy manager that works on my account. I have recruited about 20 members of staff via assessment days and 4 beauty assistants from actively seeking and interviewing candidates.
Systems and reporting
A huge part of my role as business manager is managing stock and ensuring every item has a correct stock file and is on order if needed. I must keep my item movement reports up to date and report any discrepancies to my National Account Manager.
Another key element to my role is using on counter technology, as well as making sure my team and other account managers are proficient in it. Using OCT, I complete my team’s attendance reports and monthly business reviews- it is imperative that this is completed correctly and on time, or my team will not be paid. I must also do my rota and approve any holiday requests at least six weeks in advance.
HR related duties
Every month I do performance development plans with every member of staff on my counter. This is when I will assess skills that have developed, acknowledge any areas of opportunity to improve and set personal goals to achieve by the next PDP. I also host probationary reviews and decide whether I will extend a team member’s probation or make them permanent. If anyone on my counter is unwell, I will conduct their return to work and make sure the paperwork is correctly processed and also any necessary action is taken.
I was one of two people from my brand to be selected for informal performance management training at Estee Lauder HQ. I was trained on the ‘Conduct versus Capability Model’ and how to partake in the necessary steps (i.e. record of conversations, performance improvement plans, attendance improvement plans).
Training and Development
As one of the more experienced business managers at Smashbox, I often train new and existing members of staff. If I have a new beauty assistant I will go through our new starter pack which includes basic product knowledge, uniform rules, OCT training and any other company expectations. I also develop beauty assistants that have been promoted to account manager on how to complete monthly reports, rotas and set sales targets, as well as teaching them leadership skills and how to have difficult conversations.
