About me
Amelia Lovell is a contemporary painter who was born, lives, and works in London. Her main practice involves figurative paintings, whilst attempting to make homemade oil paints. Originally from a disadvantaged background, having lived in poverty for much of her life, she was awarded a Scholarship that enabled her to study at Chelsea School of Art, University of the Arts London. Her main artistic inspirations come from the female Renaissance artist Artemisia Gentileschi to the Modern artist Jenny Saville. She wants to bring Renaissance paintings and methodologies back into the modern day through Contemporary Art. Lovell’s work looks at nature and society throughout history to the modern day; women and nature go back centuries, as does the prioritization of ‘masculine’ society over ‘feminine’ nature. From her dissertation, the story of Adam and Eve was reflective of the social practices throughout time. Eve was a representation of female humanity, and her act gave men the excuse to look down upon, condemn, and even discriminate against practically all the women in their lives. Lovell’s work circles around this idea and endeavors to try and change this view, which has seen too many women suffer. By reclaiming the image of Lovell’s body and drawing parallels between its submissive form and the pliancy of mother nature, she aims to reassert the importance of ecofeminism and the role the female body plays in the perception of Earth’s value. This year Amelia Lovell has been selected as one of the top ten art graduates of 2022 from both BA and MA courses. Lovell’s work has been shown in several public exhibitions including the Ruth Borchard Collection and most recently Chelsea College of Art’s degree show (16th-25th June 2022).
