About me
I do not have 10 years of experience as an editor in a big publishing house. I am a university drop-out and have yet to feel I have found my calling in life. Most recently, I have been working in a customer facing, retail environments. What I do have is a solid set of extremely relevant, transferable skills however; a passion for the creative arts; a love for poetry, for illustration and the power books truly have. My interest in language and the written word is something that has never felt neglect.
In the role as, not ‘Assistant Editor’ not only would I bring a genuine passion for the work and company but relevant experience and proven abilities. At O’level, my English mark was ranked highest in the country and third highest in the world. These are skills I continued to grow and demonstrate as an EFL teacher at the Samanala Foundation in Sri Lanka. In May 2015 I began working as an Editor and Marketing Assistant at Ruby Studios in Colombo where I was responsible both for producing quality content and articles for a popular travel magazine (as well as many other publications) in addition to editing the work of others. This required creativity, a good ability to organise, multitask and work to a brief and deadline as well as crucial eye for detail. I have also been commissioned as an illustrator and therefore have a true insight and appreciation into the important role it can play in children’s literature. More generally, I have broad experience in the work environment, working well in teams and including roles that have demanded a high level of personal responsibility. I am reliable and hardworking and have always approached any task given to me, whatever its nature, with a view to completing it to the highest standards.
Your struggle to diversify the industry and your commitment to increasing representation is something I feel very strongly about. Your work with The Book Trade Charity, through The Scheme and Write Now and the companies genuinely wonderful values all truthfully excite and inspire me. As a queer, mixed race human, I truly empathise with the cause and feel I could play a valuable role in seeking out new voices and stories that will speak to people everywhere. I grew up in a large family of children and have continued to work extensively with kids. I feel I connect with young people deeply, understand their likes and interests and have never forgotten what it was like to be a child myself, giving me a valuable insight into the market.
As a child I used to write and illustrate children’s books for my siblings. I took pride and joy in drafting full novels that incorporated their loves and interests and I knew would speak straight to them. Having a role in sharing the magic of books with a new generation of young people would be a dream come true.
