Projects
- Some Taxi DriversSome Taxi Drivers is an ode to taxi drivers, their machines and their workspace. The project began in Lagos, Nigeria in 2014 as Angus’ reaction to the energy, the personalities and the dynamics of the mega-city’s public transport systems. The fascination has continued throughout the rest of his travels and this has become an ongoing project both abroad and at home. For Angus, the significance of these images lies in the personal relationships that ware crafted with the participants in his photographs alongside the diversity that exists within the essential act of portaging people - particularly on the African continent. Drivers are often stereotyped and overlooked and these photographs are made in an attempt to give recognition to the worker ants of our streets. The backdrop functions as a device for collaboration between Angus, the sitters in his photographs and their workspace. By attaching the backdrop to the taxis in the images he has tried to bridge the gap between the neutral space of the studio and the environmental space of the street, the backdrop also slows down the process, allowing for a deeper connection to be made between Angus and the drivers. So far the project contains portraits of drivers from eight African countries and six European countries.
