I am an ideas person, always have been. So for the past few years I have been trying to find a creative environment in which I truly feel at home. Part of this has always been to set myself challenges, new avenues to explore in order to find my way down the right career path. Most recently I embarked on an MA in Graphic Design & Art Direction. Art has always been a passion of mine and I knew I wanted to incorporate it in my future career. Despite having worked in the creative industry, interpreting briefs, negotiating with clients, adapting to their needs and leading campaigns, the masters flipped all my expectations on their head - I was now to set my own briefs. Bouncing off other artists and being given the space and time to explore my craft opened my eyes to a whole new set of opportunities within design practice, and helped me develop skills I didn’t even know I had.
I am looking for a role that will draw upon the experience I have gained in my varied career to date. One such way is the importance of the consumer. During my time in both advertising and copywriting this was a primary focus - how would the user receive information, what impression would it leave and how did this affect their experience? With every decision made it was crucial to provide research-based evidence as support and find innovative ways to present the information - including dynamic presentations, workshops and client immersion sessions. Even the most boring of data can be delivered in a creative way!
This all ties in with the importance of planning and organisation, always essential in the implementation of any project. There are a lot of things to consider when working to complete a brief, and juggling the pressure along with the time restraints is something I became adept in after a number of years working for numerous high profile clients. Along with this, my self-sourced freelance copywriting/biography work for a variety of clients, including talent management company United Agents, required additional time management and attention to detail skills. In recent months this has been applied to my MA projects, ensuring I produce high quality pieces to pre-determined deadlines - most of which I set myself to make sure I get the most out of the course as a whole.
I feel like I have come a long way in the last few years, approaching every new challenge with a positive attitude and the belief that no idea is stupid - it’s simply a piece in an undetermined whole. The excitement comes in completing the picture. Currently I am exploring the notion of the everyday, elevating that which we mindlessly pass on a daily basis to an intriguing amalgamation of colours, lines and shapes. Punchy, bold and unique, my aim is to produce accessible art from which people can draw their own meaning - tackling head on the intimidation enveloping high art forms.
Ultimately I want to learn more! Leaving a career in London and choosing to embark on a masters in a subject I am truly passionate about was the best decision I ever made - and, along with all the experience I have to hand, I believe I could bring enthusiasm, communication skills and bundles of ideas to tackle a range of design and writing challenges. I want to be part of a forward thinking, supportive team - to consolidate my experience in the industry with that in postgraduate study, amongst the best in the business.
