20+ years of experience within branding, packaging, report design and graphics. I have designed brands and packaging for large global brands (e.g. Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company, Bacardi-Martini, Schwarzkopf, etc.) and information materials for several different development organisations (e.g. UNICEF, Jhpiego, Pact, the EU, USAID, etc.). Creative, organised and skilled in project management, I meet all deadlines. I communicate well and am responsive and easy to work with, always maintaining a solutions-oriented approach. I have 13 years of experience as a Creative Director and have been an instrumental part of two agency startups (DJPA London & DJPA Africa). I work equally well remotely as part of a team.Locked Pro Plan feature
Since July 2018 I have been based in Stockholm as a freelance design consultant (I am tax and VAT registered). Working remotely suits me well as I am disciplined, motivated and very service minded, but I am equally suited to working in a team. My assignments are varied and globally diverse.
My partner and I started up DJPA Africa Ltd. in 2005. Originally just the two of us, we grew the company into a medium-sized, full-service advertising and design agency, with 8-10 employees. I was the Creative Director and was responsible for the design team and creative output. I also managed many of my own clients and sourced new business. Working in Tanzania has its own unique challenges, and of course a target market that is very different from that in Europe. I enjoy understanding new markets and consumer psychology does in many ways remain similar or the same, even if the cultural approach is different. The professional creative field is less specialised in Tanzania, which gave me the opportunity to expand my skills beyond branding, FMCG and POS packaging design. I worked on everything from concept and design of short TVC and radio adverts, to designing and producing print materials for reports, events, banners, and branded activations. Selection of projects worked: - UNICEF Tanzania Violence Against Children Campaign branding, reports, banners - UNICEF Tanzania Youth & Adolescence reports - ILO Coffee Table Book - GCCA (EU) Reports, Fact sheets, Event branding, Infographics, PowerPoint presentations - FEMA Youth Magazine Redesign + InDesign templates created / Design of lead articles for 10 issues - JHPIEGO (USAID/Tanzania Ministry of Health) Tanzania Annual Reports / Sauti Project Branding & Social Behaviour Change Materials / End of project materials for various Jhpiego initiatives - JHPIEGO SBCC Campaign on voluntary male circumcision (concept, creation & production for above and below the line, information materials for end-users, events, etc.) - SABMiller (Now AB InBev) Design and launch (packaging, advertising, video/audio, social media, events, merchandising, etc.) of new brand Kili Twist / Balimi Premium Lager (all advertising, print materials, merchandising, interiors, events, etc.)
I was involved with the startup of DJPA in the UK. As well as being one of the senior designers I had input into management and recruitment of creatives. My day-to-day work included design & art direction, photography & illustration direction, client meetings & presentations. Selection of assignments: - Conimex Asian Foods rebrand & package design applied across 100+ items - Riedel Juices & Friesland Foods design and launch (branding, packaging, POS) of several different new products. Various target audiences ranging from kids to youth to adults - Schwarzkopf rebrand and package design of various haircare ranges targeting youth
From 1992 to 1994 I had a few transitional years, freelancing as a designer in the Netherlands, Tanzania, and the UK. My jobs varied from packaging design to print ads to graphic design and layout of reports. The jobs were not always that exciting but I benefited greatly from learning how to find new business, service clients and take designs from concept to final print.
I was lucky to work as the assistant designer to the Creative Director in my first real job. I learned a lot and was given varied tasks (illustration, packaging design, brochures & annual report design, on-location art direction of photographer & models). I would have stayed longer at De Witt Coppenhagen, but my partner at the time was transferred to Tanzania and I followed him.
Studio Bauman was a great place for an internship as they did some really creative and fun work in the 1990s. It was a small team which gave me lots of opportunities to be a very hands-on intern. The team was also really great at supporting me in my endeavour to learn Dutch!
