- FACING SLAPSTICKA pianist plays a silent cinema soundtrack while I perform facial expressions which are simultaneously filmed in close up and shown as a large projection behind. This installation consisting of these three elements creates an “assignation” of the present sound (piano), the present image (myself performing) and the past image (the close up at the back). Apart from that I am targeting the viewer’s limits of awkwardness. I am trying to transmit emotions, whether these are going to cause tears or laughter. This project is influenced by the Deadpan face acting techniques from the silent film era typified by actor, director and producer Buster Keaton. Furthermore I am fascinated with the close ups and montage practices of the master of Soviet montage Sergei Eisenstein and I use his Rhythmic (rough cut) technique to give pace and dynamism to my work.
