Poesia in MovimentoThis project aimed to report, through photo and video, eight unknown deaf Italian poets during their poetical performances.
  • Postcards from Calabria
Postcards from CalabriaThese images are yellowed like some old postcards. They look as if they had been taken twenty or thirty years ago, but unfortunately they date back only two years. These photographs show the suffering of Calabria, an Italian region whose development is hampered by the asphyxiating tentacles of the 'Ndrangheta. Today the 'Ndrangheta is one of most successful crime organizations in the world. It controls all the drug trafficking in Europe and it has diversified its activities as a multinational company. 'Ndrangheta operates with the same success both in the field of the illegal arms trade and human trafficking. While the families of the ‘Ndrangheta are becoming increasingly rich, Calabria remains pinned near the bottom of the economic income and employment indicators. The entrepreneurs with clean money run away from these lands. Mafia does not create wealth, but is the damnation of the territories where it operates. Here there are only degradation and underdevelopment.
  • Fleeing violence in Colombia
Fleeing violence in ColombiaColombia presents the highest number of internally displaced people in the western hemisphere. The displacement is related to the country's four-decade-long internal armed conflict, the most protracted in Latin America. Some people find themselves caught in the midst of fighting between leftist guerrillas and right-wing paramilitaries seeking to establish territorial control over strategic regions. Others are displaced by paramilitaries because they live on resource-rich or economically valuable lands. Upon seizing control of an area, armed groups often kill civilians and abuse of women and girls. Healthcare access is difficult and dangerous for those in rural conflict zones and those forced to seek refuge in urban slums. In some areas internally displaced young men were forcibly recruited into irregular armed groups. Human rights defenders suspected of supporting the opposing side are frequently killed.
  • The Judiciary Psychiatric Hospital of Aversa
The Judiciary Psychiatric Hospital of AversaThe Judiciary Psychiatric Hospital of Aversa is the biggest and oldest of the six still existing in Italy. Its history is often intertwined with the history of Italian psychiatry of the last century, representing a leading scientific and cultural centre and, at the same time, a symbol of horror and rejection. Half hospital and half prison, the J.P.H. houses almost 300 inmates judged mentally ill but still dangerous by the law-court. In 1978, the so-called Basaglia Law (law n. 180/1978) outlawed all mental Italian asylums. Most of this modern law was not applied. Today there is in Italy a debate about the utility to keep still open the Judiciary Psychiatric Hospitals. Unanime is the conviction that the J.P.H. have done their time and that institutions must propose new alternatives to promote care, rehabilitation and social reintegration of the mentally ill offender.
  • Kurdistan: the other Iraq
Kurdistan: the other IraqKurds inherited a devastated country from the regime of Saddam Hussein. Following the removal of his administration, the region fully under the Kurdistan Regional Government’s control was the only in Iraq to be ranked “secure” by the US army. The security and stability of the region has allowed the KRG to sign a number of investment contracts with foreign companies and to achieve a higher level of development than other regions in Iraq. Nowadays the government receives the 17% of the total revenues from Iraq’s oil exports. Kurdistan has currently the lowest poverty rates in Iraq and this strong economy is also attracting new investors and workers from other parts of Iraq and from other countries. The investments in the region currently total more than $14bn, including housing, reforesting, building infrastructure. Tourism is steadily increasing as more people discover this region and the kurdish families rediscover a peaceful and normal life.
  • Italien Front - The Italian Front in the I World War
Italien Front - The Italian Front in the I World WarThe Great War began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war. Italian Front was a series of battles at the border between the Austria-Hungary and Italy, fought between 1915 and 1918. The high altitudes of Alps mountains, very cold winters and the Karstic terrain gave rise to a series of bloody and inconclusive stalemated offensives. Many battles sites of the Italian Front have now become places of memory. They are real open-air museums, where the local people - guides, historical re-enactors, forest rangers, recovering men - give the historical events life, through tales, and help the visitors to understand and imagine the human stories of the Great War. I have been travelling during winter, spring and summer 2014 reporting the trenches, the forts, the open air museums, private collections, war cemeteries, the commemorative events, the war tourism and the daily life of these places.
