About me
Astrid Stavro was born in Trieste, Italy and studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, where she received her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) with a First Class Certificate. She graduated with a Master of Arts at The Royal College of Art (with Distinction) in 2004. Stavro then moved to Barcelona where she founded and directed the award winning Astrid Stavro Studio for ten years.
She has an international reputation for idea-based design, applied with exquisite typographic sensibility and attention to craft.
In 2013 she founded the internationally acclaimed design firm Atlas alongside Pablo Martín. Stavro was invited to join Pentagram as a Partner in 2018, where she stayed until September 2021.
Her wide-ranging expertise encompasses the design of books, magazines, brand identities, posters, exhibitions, signage and packaging. She worked for Phaidon, Camper, Vitra, Laurence King, Lars Müller Publishers, Acciona, Wallpaper* magazine, The National Portrait Gallery, Port magazine, Stauffer Center for Strings, CCCB (Barcelona’s Center of Contemporary Art) and the Barcelona Design Museum amongst many others.
Stavro lectures extensively on design related subjects across the globe and has chaired and judged the most prestigious global design competitions. Her work has been recognized with more than 200 international design awards, including D&AD, ADC (Art Directors Club of NY), TDC (Type Directors Club of NY), SPD (Society of Publication Designers), AIGA/ Design Observer (50 Books/50 Covers), Graphis, ISTD (International Society of Publication Designers), The Annual (Creative Review), Design Week Awards, ADC*E (The Art Directors Club of Europe) and the Spanish Laus Awards. In 2015, Atlas was honoured with a D&AD Graphite Pencil for the most awarded international graphic design agency and Elephant magazine was named Magazine of the Year Medal Finalist at SPD.
Stavro’s work has been repeatedly featured and profiled in specialized and mainstream books and publications, including Eye magazine, I.D., Print, Wallpaper*, The Guardian, El País, Creative Review, Domus and Grafik as well as books by Phaidon, Thames & Hudson, Rizzoli and Laurence King. She has written for some of the top international design Journals and was the Design Director and contributing Editor of Elephant magazine.
She been a Visiting Lecturer at Central Saint Martins College and the Royal College of Art, and has lectured and given workshops in numerous colleges including ECAL, The School of Visual Arts NY and Politecnico di Milano amongst others.
Stavro is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), the world’s most prestigious design association.
In 2016, Stavro was invited to join the AGI Board (IEC, International Executive Committee) as Treasurer. Stavro is a past board member of the Association of Spanish Graphic Designers (ADG) and FAD (Foster in Art & Design).
Other current memberships and affiliations include Graphis (where she is a Design Master), The International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD), AIGA (The American Professional Association for Design), D&AD (British Design & Art Direction), SPD (Society of Publication Designers), ADC (Art Directors Club of New York), TDC (Type Directors Club of New York), ADG (Association of Spanish Graphic Designers), YCN (You Can Now, London) and AIAP (Italian Association of Graphic Designers).
