My role as Station Manager is demanding, with over 100 paid members contributing to our presenting, playlist, sports & news teams. I am responsible for informing an 11-strong committee, and to ensure that they are fulfilling their roles to the best of their abilities. As well as chairing committee meetings, I have also assumed the role of Head of Music, which has seen me chairing weekly playlist meetings. This has massively benefitted the social side of the society, and will put the station in a positive direction after I graduate.
My role at Curious PR largely focuses on plugging client songs to student & commercial radio stations, and to ensure that press releases are of a professional standard. Some of my accomplishments include getting our first client, Southampton-based band Pioneers, on to the Amazing Radio & Voice FM playlists, as well as setting up acoustic sessions on Sound Radio's (Winchester) 24-hour charity broadcast and the Student Radio Association's Chart Show (broadcast nationally across all student stations).
This course has taught me a wide range of music industry-related skills, and has also heavily encouraged me to apply them to real-life situations. For example, the PR skills taught in my first year have led to me starting Curious PR with some of my fellow students. As well as this, the live music industries unit in second year gave me the skills to promote a gig for rising indie/rock bands Thyla & Beach Riot, both of which I had previously featured on my Radio Sonar show. The micro-industry that the music courses creates for students here is very unique, and I am hungry to apply my learning to even more real-world situations.
