About me
I’m a visual artist based in London, working with photography and installation. Following my graduation from the Royal College of Art I focused on portraiture, both of humans and animals, developing an observational approach combined with a distinctive use of the profile view and silhouette that continues to underpin my practice. I create installations and develop exhibitions and public engagement activities with themes that have a biographical, political or environmental relevance. My practice draws upon historical iconography, scientific methods of observation as well as the traditions of painted portrait miniatures and silhouettes, whilst exploring the role photography has played within the structures of the museum. For past projects I have collaborated with staff and students at The Royal College of Music, The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, The V&A, The New-York Historical Society Museum, The Anna Freud Centre and Prior Weston Primary School. I have been exhibiting since 1999 with a track record of successfully completing ambitious projects and commissions, most notably recent solo exhibitions at The New-York Historical Society Museum, USA (2018), The Freud Museum, London (2017); National Portrait Gallery (2012); Cultural Centre, Poznan, Poland, (2012) and Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood, London (2009). Work in public collections includes: Arts Council Collection; V&A; Guggenheim, New York and National Portrait Gallery. My work features widely in arts magazines, online, and in important survey books and monographs including 21st Century Portraits (NPG/2013); Vitamin Ph. (Phaidon/2009); The Photograph as Contemporary Art (T&H 2009/14/20) and Bettina von Zwehl, Monograph (Steidl/2007).
