Photographer and Filmmaker based in Colombia and The Netherlands
Through his independent work Camo depicts queer culture and social and sexual diversity in the world of art, fashion and documentary photography. Camo links these different contexts in his intimate, raw and sometimes more polished photographic works that emerge from his personal life experiences in the problematic, but the vibrant social-political climate of Latin-America. Over the past 10 years, Camo’s work has mostly centered around portraiture; photographs in which he weaves natural beauty, spontaneous acts, and every day into often provocative imagery. Recently Camo has focused more on his passion for media and video experimentation and through his interest for Ethnofiction - a concept that declares a union between ethnography, art, media and fiction - he expresses his personal view on forms of alternative visual anthropology. Nowdays, with The Museum of Censorship, he continues to challenge the harmless form of beauty, making it bolder and more audacious through processes of sociological collage; taking elements that are transgressive and disparate and using them to criticize aesthetic restrictions, such as censorship, to speak about his own convictions (The Censurantism, If the Walls could Speak, Fagotcytosis)
WHAT IS A CAMOGRAPHY?
Camography: The art of setting and deconstructing through a series of ethnographic, performative and countercultural reactions, done generally in raw but oftentimes also conveniently prepared situations. In a ‘costumbrist’ and countercultural manner the gathered backgrounds in his images show - without any pretensions - the power of Camo’s impact as a transistor between the underground and mainstream. He is a graphic illustrator of a situation aesthetically disarmed, where the subject to be photographed feels as if they were gracing the most common situation with a subversive and glamorous touch. This touch is at the same time of a charming and disagreeable esthetics, accessibile through the simple technique of a portrait taken within the most intimate situations, that can recall one to Terry Jones’ earliest editorial works for i-D. You recognize the sincere and explicit sensuality of Camo’s idols such as Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans and Juergen Teller, and the inspiration he takes from the moving images of Wim Wenders, but placed in a territory abruptly contrasting to those references. Camo has made his mark in the underground and mainstream Latin-American art scene through pure and expressive images, consciously exoticizing, eroticizing and re-appropriating the natural “state” of his continent and its inhabitants.
