About me
I am Carla Geronimi (b.1998, Switzerland), an Artist-Filmmaker based in London. I create moving image works that showcase imaginary places, fictional stories and creature-like characters. I seek to explore dreams, memory and identity with the use of non-coherent story-lines and absurd narratives. Through my practice, I explore ideas of uncanniness, anthropomorphism and sensory experience. Drawing my inspiration from symbols and myths found in Folklore, Literature and Cinema, I am interested in documenting reality and then fictionalising it through my works. Fascinated by inanimate objects, I often explores their sonic qualities. Intrigued by animals, I observe and create stories around them; as an investigation on different types of consciousness and identities. I explore these themes through the use of experimental story-telling and media-based techniques, with a desire to evoke, to suggest and to stimulate the viewer’s imagination. My works have been showcased in various places around the world, such as at the Festival del Cinema di Cefalù (Italy), Millepiani Gallery (Italy), Festival International du Film de Nancy (France), Marienbad Film Festival (Czech Republic), Gallery 46 and Iklectik Arts Lab (London). My sound pieces were broadcast for three consecutive years on Resonance Extra Radio in 2018, 2019 and 2020. After a BA (Hons) in Sound Arts & Design at University of the Arts London, I am currently undertaking a MA in Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Fine Art, also in London.

  • Ladon | Short Film
Ladon | Short FilmAs we drift through a mythical forest, a sense of fantasy arises when an intriguing apple starts to attract a body of lizard. Loosely revisiting the Greek myth of Ladon and the Garden of the Hesperides, observational sequences of Dragon Trees and creature-like reptiles evoke the mystical stories and symbols associated to them. With its tale-like narration, ‘Ladon’ is a reflection on physical existence in relation to the beliefs constructed behind it.

The Incantatory Magic of the Symbolic Gesture | VideoIn “Le merveilleux et le théâtre du silence” (1965), Marie-Françoise Christout states that “the ideal mime recreates the world through the incantatory magic of the symbolic gesture”. This work depicts a direct interpretation of the concept of imprisonment, in response to the current pandemic situation, through a mime performing in a never ending tunnel. Questioning claustrophobia in a broader spectrum (from our over-use of technology, to the typical image of the mime stuck inside the box), repet

The video questions notions of femininity, beauty, identity and the relations between bodies and their surroundings. Schemes of colours, movements and symbols evoke the possible emotional conflicts and confusions experienced by women through social pressure such as gender stereotypes or ideals of beauty.
